Derasat and Arab Energy Club Host Strategic Webinar on Strait of Hormuz and Global Energy Security

The Bahrain Center for Strategic, International and Energy Studies Derasat, in partnership with the Arab Energy Club, convened a high level webinar titled “Developments in the Strait of Hormuz Between Geography and Global Energy Security.” The session brought together leading Arab experts and policymakers to examine the implications of rising geopolitical tensions on global energy markets.

Held virtually, the webinar featured a distinguished group of speakers including senior government officials, research leaders, and energy experts. Among the speakers were Dr. Carole Nakhle, Secretary General of the Arab Energy Club, and Kate Dourian, Executive Committee Member of the Club, who contributed valuable insights on energy markets and regional dynamics.

Participants highlighted that current tensions are no longer short term disruptions but represent structural risks to global energy security. They emphasized the critical role of maintaining freedom of navigation and the importance of international law in ensuring uninterrupted energy flows.

The discussion also explored potential market impacts, including increased price volatility, higher insurance and shipping costs, and mounting pressure on global supply chains.

Key takeaways from the discussion:

  • Current developments extend beyond energy markets and carry significant economic and social consequences.
  • The focus on oil and gas prices often overlooks the human dimension of the crisis.
  • The real impact of disruptions is felt directly by individuals, households, and communities.
  • Labor forces are among the most affected, with implications for livelihoods and productivity.
  • Integrating the human dimension into crisis analysis is essential to understand medium and long term impacts.

Participants called for stronger regional coordination, improved information sharing, and enhanced infrastructure resilience. They also underlined the need to diversify supply routes and strengthen emergency response mechanisms.

This webinar reflects the continued collaboration between Derasat and the Arab Energy Club in fostering strategic dialogue and supporting informed decision making on critical energy issues
