Arab Energy Club Meeting in Saudi Arabia: Shared Visions and In-depth Discussions on Global Energy Developments and Their Impact on the Arab Region
The Arab Energy Club held its annual meeting for 2024 on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, hosted graciously by the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC). The meeting welcomed 52 participants, including 30 members and 22 invited guests from leading energy-related organizations, as well as 13 new members who officially joined the Forum during this event.
The meeting was honored by the presence of His Excellency Eng. Jamal Al-Loughani, Secretary-General of the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC), His Excellency Dr. Jassim Al-Shirawi, Secretary-General of the International Energy Forum (IEF), and His Excellency Mr. Fahad Al-Ajlan, President of KAPSARC.
The agenda featured several insightful sessions on critical energy topics, including:
1. The Path of Global Energy Transition: Participants discussed the outcomes of COP 29, with examples of energy transition pathways in advanced economies and Arab countries, as well as the challenges facing the achievement of declared goals.
2. Energy Transition and the Growing Role of Clean Energy Technologies: This session addressed opportunities and challenges in clean energy technologies, focusing on hydrogen’s role in the energy transition, its production and trade, and the role of carbon capture and storage technologies. Updates on the regional voluntary carbon market were also highlighted.
3. Energy Markets Outlook: Speakers analyzed oil and gas markets in the context of ongoing conflicts in Ukraine, Palestine, and Lebanon, discussing the risks of escalation and emerging threats. The session also explored shipping routes and strategies for developing energy resources in the Middle East, considering the region’s varied political and economic contexts and the intensifying pressures of global climate policies.
Established in 2007, the Arab Energy Club fosters dialogue and collaboration among energy experts in Arab countries, aiming to advance the sector’s contribution to economic and social development. The Club also addresses global energy trends, including renewables, and their implications for the Arab region, while raising awareness of the intersection between energy, environment, and development.
This meeting is part of the Club’s annual activities to achieve its mission.
